Beauty Queen Totem

Beauty Queen Totem both challenges and illuminates society’s ideas about beauty.  This sculpture was executed at the Studio D’arte Corsanini in Carrara, Italy and resembles a beauty pageant trophy.  Its towering presence provides a key point of reference for the exploration of beauty, its power and burden, and society’s prescribed criteria for it.

Three seemingly identical Beauty Queen Totems were created as if to test the proposition that beauty really is “skin deep”.  One totem is sculpted in creamy Carrara Bianco marble, a stone markedly suitable to renaissance sculpture, religious iconography;  the other two are cast resin.
