BITCH, 2018
Neon, electrical cord
73 x 55 inches
An addition to Hovnanian’s Acronym Neon series, BITCH reclaims a codified word using an acronym, the new language of our digital age. Here, BITCH becomes a positively-charged word that rewrites its history as one that was used to demean women. In our online contemporary culture, the anonymity of commenting from behind a keyboard leads to a rise in cyber-harassment. BITCH seeks to usher in a wave of re-definitions.

Happy Hour Clock, 2018
Clock face and neon mounted to powder-coated board
18 x 18 x 3 inches
The centerpiece of the Rosé Room, Hovnanian’s Happy Hour Clock runs in hyperspeed. The clock hits 5:00 pm at least once an hour - happy hour is never that far away. The neon border pays a nod to bar signs, casting a pink glow on the wall of drawings that feature icons and aftermaths of American drinking culture.

FLIRL, 2018
Neon mounted to white powder-coated aluminum
48 x 36 x 5 inches
Part of the artist’s Acronym Neons series, FLIRL (Feel Love in Real Life) comments on the ways in which social media has caused us to translate our love language into a “like” language. We have begun to express our care for those around us primarily through our online interactions. As a result, we are quickly becoming desensitized to the significance of a “like”. FLIRL reiterates the necessity to express our care in more meaningful ways.

Bimbo Neon, 2018
Plaster cloth, resin, neon, spray paint, acrylic
21.5 x 12.5 x 7 inches
In Bimbo Neon, Hovnanian has created a wall sculpture of a pair of breasts that seem to leak the word “Bimbo” from the nipples. With this work, the artist visualizes the notion that women are often branded with labels that reference their sexuality. Bimbo Neon satirizes the societal objectification of women and their bodies.
